The cables published online on WikiLeaks are really shocking. They contain opinions and observations that unfold what the American diplomacy thinks of the Albanian political class as a whole, and of its favorite Sali Berisha in particular (we all know how important is the American opinion for the ruling establishment in Albania). But more than anything else, these cables provide shocking facts and details that “materialize” what we so far only guessed, or reinforce things that we knew only superficially or they teach us things that we didn’t know before. The prime minister’s son who grants himself  right to call the Chief of Staff of the Albanian Army on the phone and give him orders; the Chief of Staff of the Army who testifies at the U.S. embassy that he fears for his life from the ruling family; another Chief of Staff nominated in this position despite rumors that he took money from personnel he sent on peace-keeping missions (the phenomenon of selling high-ranking posts is spread like a plague; other facts may be revealed later not necessarily by WikiLeaks); a prime minister that makes the law on this land with his family and for the benefit of his family; right- and left-wing MPs involved in criminal activities; a big shot director of police tied to the criminal underworld and his superior knows everything but has his hands tied, for the guy is a relative of the prime minister’s; a minister that releases inmates from prison so that they could give him a hand in the electoral campaigns; a prime minister who wants to win elections at any costs, because that’s the only way he can escape justice etc…, etc…
